Historic Jewels Stolen in National Disaster Heist at Louvre Museum
On October 19, 2025, a daring and swift robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris resulted in the theft of nine priceless pieces of French Crown Jewels from the famed Galerie d'Apollon, marking one of the biggest cultural losses in France's history. The robbery unfolded in just about four to seven minutes, starting shortly after the museum opened around 9:30 AM local time. The thieves, reportedly three to four in number, were disguised as workers, wearing high-visibility vests to blend in. They used a mechanical ladder mounted on a compact truck to access the Apollo Gallery through a balcony window near the River Seine.
Equipped with power tools such as angle grinders and a blowtorch, the robbers expertly and calmly broke through two high-security display cases. CCTV footage showed them moving quickly and professionally before fleeing the scene on scooters that awaited them.
Fortunately, no physical harm came to museum staff or visitors during the incident. However, the entire museum was shut down immediately as police launched an intensive investigation.

Tiara, large corsage bow brooch, and reliquary brooch belonging to Empress Eugénie, a celebrated fashion icon of the time. The bow brooch had origins as a diamond belt buckle worn during historic events and was later converted into an elaborate jewelry piece.
An elaborate gold crown worn by Empress Eugénie, which was fortunately recovered near the crime scene, though it suffered damage during the theft.
A pearl diadem with 212 pearls and nearly 2,000 diamonds, also dropped by the thieves and found damaged outside the museum.

Despite swift police response involving over 60 detectives and the crime footage, the prospect of recovering the stolen jewels appears grim. Specialists in art crime note that such jewels are especially vulnerable to rapid disassembly. Once taken apart, the diamonds, emeralds, and gold components can be melted down, recut, and sold on legitimate or black markets worldwide, making tracing nearly impossible.
As a result, experts fear the looted treasures may be irretrievably lost over time, and only a small fraction of their true value might be recovered if at all. The jewels have been added to INTERPOL’s Stolen Works of Art database to alert authorities globally in hopes of any lead.

The Louvre Museum remains closed as it processes the aftermath and bolsters security measures. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati called the event a “national disaster” and lamented the loss of items that symbolize France’s cultural heritage.
